San Tan Valley is the New Kid on the Block
If you look at a map before 2010, you might not see anything referred to as San Tan Valley. That’s because this community name was only selected in 2009. The area is still unincorporated, but the name serves as a census-approved area and a specific postal area.
The area is bounded by the mountains to the west and Queen Creek to the north. The Gila River Indian Community is on the southwest, and the town of Florence is just down East Hunt Way on the North Pinal Parkway.
Although 45 miles from Phoenix AZ, the area has become part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metro area since it was designated San Tan Valley. It is actually located in northern Pinal County. Of course it does border Maricopa County.
The area includes numerous planned neighborhoods. There’s San Tan Heights, White Wing, Copper Basin, Borgata, Laredo Ranch, Castlegate, and Pecan Creek South. Johnson Ranch is home to about 20,000 people. The most recent census count for the valley showed that the area population has grown from 81,321 in 2010 to 96,692 in 2020.
Activities in San Tan Valley
A car is really a must for those of us in San Tan Valley. There are many activities, but it takes wheels to get there. The San Tan Mountain Regional Park offers nine hiking trails and encounters with desert tortoises and other wildlife. If you go a bit further, you can head to Riparian Park for some of the best birdwatching in the U.S.
In the spring, there’s nothing like Cactus League games, and you need wheels to go to one of the many stadiums. From the valley, you may want to head to Glendale for professional football games or go see WildCat games at the University of Arizona. Golfers will want to challenge themselves on the many golf courses in the valley and across the larger Phoenix AZ area.
There are tons of historical opportunities in our area. You can go 1,000 years in time at the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. In Tucson, you can head to the San Xavier del Bac historical landmark. In Scottsdale, you can visit Taliesin West to see the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Scenic Driving Near San Tan Valley
