The Colorful History of Chandler AZ
It’s hard to imagine our state without golf courses. There had to be a first. The original grass golf course was created in Chandler, Arizona in 1913. It was built to serve the Hotel San Marcos at the original town center.
The town is named for Dr. Alexander Chandler, the first Arizona Territory veterinarian. He bought many acres in the area in 1900. Twenty years later, when the city was incorporated, Dr. Chandler was chosen as the first mayor.
For over 30 years, the Chandler Ostrich Festival has brought the large bird to the city. This fun event was started as a nod to the ostrich ranching that once brought money into the economy. Around 1910, ostrich farming was in its heyday as haberdashers sought ostrich feathers for women’s hats.
Chandler was home to the youngest franchisee in Ford history. That was 21-year-old Tex Earnhardt in 1951. Eventually he became the founder of the family-owned auto dealerships in Chandler, Gilbert, and the Phoenix area. Our new and used Hyundai dealerships in Chandler was founded in 2007.
Employment, Commuting, and Transportation in Chandler AZ
Starting in the 1980s, the town began to grow thanks to some major employers in a wide variety of industries. Currently you’ll find that Intel is the largest employer. Microchip Technology and NXP SemiConductors have a large presence here, too.
Aviation and aerospace employers, such as Northrop Grumman, are numerous here and across the region. Financial service firms are big employers, too. The city is home to PayPal, Wells Fargo and Bank of America.
Of course, many of us commute out of Chandler to somewhere else in the Phoenix metro area. We are all too familiar with the traffic on Interstate 10.
Completed in 2001, Loop 101 is known as the Price Freeway. More than 10,000 people work along this corridor. Completed in 2006, Loop 202 connects Chandler to the entire Phoenix Arizona area.

Things to Do in Chandler
History is everywhere around here. The Arizona Railway Museum celebrates the trains that helped bring people and goods to Chandler when it was still a sleepy little town.
Our beautiful weather and remarkable surroundings are the perfect backdrop. There are so many Chandler area parks where we can find outdoor fun. The Riparian Preserve offers bird watching, hiking, fishing, a paleontology dig site, botanical gardens, and star-gazing at an observatory.
When you want entertainment in Chandler, you’ve got great choices. These include the Chandler Center for the Arts and the Higley Center for the Performing Arts. Our dealership is off Pecos Road to the west whereas the Higley Center is about nine miles to the east on Pecos Road.
The Phoenix Rising Suns have their new soccer complex in Chandler. This region is rich with pro sports opportunities, including the Cactus League in early spring.
The state has so many beautiful places in close proximity, especially when you have a good car to drive. It’s easy to cruise through the amazing Painted Desert in an afternoon, spend a day at Lake Roosevelt, or visit the Grand Canyon for the weekend.
