A Brief History of Mesa
Mesa City was registered as a 1-square-mile town in 1878. Today it measures 133.13 square miles. In 1883, it was incorporated with a population of 300. In the 2020 Census, the population had grown to 504,258. It’s officially the third largest Arizona city.
The town steadily increased in population up until 1940. However, it was World War II that saw the population double to more than 7,000. The Army-Air Force came here to use the desert’s broad flat expanse as airfields. After the war, the renamed Williams Air Force Base continued to train pilots. It helped attract aviation and aerospace companies to Mesa.
Now the old base is home to Phoenix-Mesa Airport which averages 1.5 million-plus passengers a year. Well-known companies such as Boeing, Northrop Gruman and Lockheed Martin are among the many flight-related businesses that keep the Mesa economy growing.
