2024 Hyundai Sonata Review | A Big Makeover Extends to Sonata HEV and N Line Sedans
This is not a normal year for the Hyundai midsize sedan. The 2024 Hyundai Sonata, 2024 Sonata Hybrid, and N Line turbo models look different inside and out.
Do those changes represent a substantial shift for this midsize sports sedan or is it all cosmetic? Keep scrolling to find out more.
Coupe-Like Good Looks
Any good upgrade includes a new exterior, and the Sonata has a new style that will not disappoint. It is contemporary, speaking to 2024 buyers who expect the most up-to-date new ride. The design is special, combining a coupe-like style with the latest Hyundai design cues.
Up front, there are clean horizontal lines that add to the car’s wide stance. A new grille provides a distinctive focal point for the 2024 Hyundai Sonata. Above it, one seamless daytime running light stretches like a smile across the front hood edge. Headlights are tucked under, hiding until needed.
The raised hood and shaped sides give it a coupe silhouette that defies its large interior size. At the rear, a special exhaust-shaped treatment includes a special spoiler-shaped trunk lid. The H-shaped tail lights stretch the light from side to side.
This look becomes more athletic with the 2024 Hyundai Sonata N Line trim. Grille and bumper design changes add to its leaner sports sedan design. A dual twin-pipe exhaust and spoiler garnish are rear-end upgrades.
New High Tech Cockpit
For some, the biggest change is the way technology shapes the cockpit. A curved glass screen connects the digital instrument panel to the touchscreen. This curved shape puts everything in easy sight and touch of the busy driver.
It gives more definition to the 2024 Hyundai Sonata cabin, setting the driver apart from the front passenger. Special touches include a palm rest on the center console and a 6.6-inch horizontal screen for the automatic temperature controls.
With push button start, your keyfob can stay in your pocket. It can even stay home if you are using your smartphone and the updated Hyundai Digital Key.. An electric parking brake and steering column-mounted shifter free up space.
When you upgrade to built-in navigation, the infotainment system becomes even more sophisticated. This includes natural voice recognition and the ability to learn your habits. Over-the-air updates help ensure the system stays current from year to year.
Cabin and Trunk Size
There's no difference in size between the regular and hybrid Sonatas. This leaves shoppers free to consider every trim equally.
At 104 cubic feet, the 2024 Sonata sedan is actually bigger inside than some SUVs. The redesigned cockpit and dashboard adds to the feeling of spaciousness. Drivers can get a power chair for even more wiggle room.
Trunks measure 16 cubic feet. This is quite big for the class. For instance, the Nissan Altima trunk is 15.4 cubes, and the Toyota Camry trunk is 15.1 cubes.
There’s a best-in-class power trunk feature on the Sonata menu as well. The rear seats can fold to allow for longer items.
Interior and Exterior Color Choices
The standard interior is a rich black-on-black upholstery with related trim elements. However, this sedan likes to get dressed up in two-tone styles. There’s cool camel tan that balances a dark gray. If you prefer, a rich beige can bring warmth to that same dark gray.
2024 Hyundai Sonata N Line models add flashes of red. This sporty color livens up the dashboard and the vents. Red stitching gives a racy look to the suede-and-leather upholstery.
There are ten exterior colors, including the exclusive Aero Matter Silver. This N Line-only paint choice changes in the light due to its special metallic pigments. It fits right in with the sporty attitude of this sports sedan.
Carbon Blue and Transmission Blue are Pearl color choices. Metallics come in Portofino Gray and Ultimate Red. You can go for something more subdued with Cream Beige or a special gray matte, or you can go mysterious with Onyx Black. At any rate, there’s something for every personality in this list.
Interior Colors: Black, Dark Gray, Beige, Camel
N Line Accents: Red
Metallics: Ultimate Red, Portofino Gray
Pearls: Onyx Black, Serenity White, Carbon Blue, Transmission Blue
Matte: Porofino Gray
Additional: Atlas White, Cream Beige
N Line Exclusive: Aero Matter Silver
Performance and Fuel Efficiency Choices
There are four powertrain choices, giving shoppers two more options than most midsize sedans offer today. Sonata SE trims have a 191-horsepower engine. This front-wheel drive system controls its 181 lb-ft of torque with a CVT automatic transmission.
Many drivers will want to step up to the turbo four. It produces 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Yet the gas mileage is almost as good as the standard engine.
For the new model year, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata lineup includes all-wheel drivetrains as an alternative to the standard front wheel drive. This adds a Snow mode as well as all-weather capability.
HTRAC AWD has automatic electronic controls and electro-hydraulic capability. This allows it to switch back and forth between front-wheel and all-wheel drive at any moment.
Gas Mileage -- Combined: City/Highway
N Line Turbo -- 27: 23/33 mpg
Standard GasTurbo -- 31:27/37 mpg
Standard Gas Engine -- 32: 28/38 mpg
Hybrid Limited -- 49: 45/51 mpg
Hybrid Blue -- 52: 50/54 mpg
Sonata N Line Performance Features
The sporty N Line turbo is the speediest of the bunch. This sports sedan boosts the output to 290 horsepower. The torque rate is 311 lb-ft of torque.
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata N Line has a number of special tools to help drivers get the most from this family sports sedan. Launch Control is a sports car tool that builds up power just before you start. It speeds up acceleration for faster 0-60 mph sprints.
With N Grin Shift, there is a spike in torque that lasts for up to 20 seconds. Drivers can trigger it with the push of a button. N Powershift can kick in when the accelerator hits 90 percent of its capability. This triggers a boost in torque and maintains upshifting to allow the driver to enjoy maximum velocity.
N Line capability wouldn’t be possible without its 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This wet-type transmission utilizes extra oil to ensure lubrication and cooling.
The smart system actually learns the driver’s style and can match its shift points to help the driver achieve their goals. Electronic actuators assist with making speedy gear changes. When going downhill, it may utilize engine braking to avoid actually braking.
Upgrades to the 2024 Sonata Hybrid
Hybrid combined horsepower is 192. Even better, the torque rate is 151 lb-ft for the electric motor and 139 lb-ft for the engine. That’s energy you’ll feel every time you hit the accelerator.
For 2024, regenerative braking has become more sophisticated. The system captures energy and rechannels it back into the battery pack.
However, drivers like to have some control over this system. So this model year, Sonata Hybrids have adjustable regenerative brakes. This allows the driver to ask for more stopping power or less, based on driving habits and conditions.
Another new feature is e-Motion Drive. This gives 2024 Sonata Hybrid drivers flexibility in how they utilize their car’s electric power. Just for fun, paddles shifters are another 2024 feature.
Driver Aids and Semi-Automated Features
Adding value to every 2024 Sonata, Hyundai includes the most important driver aids. These aids watch the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. They have emergency autobrake capability and steering assistance, depending on the system.
Forward Collision Avoidance with Autobrake
Blind Spot Monitor with Assist
Lane Keeping Assist
Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Assist
Adaptive cruise control uses the forward watch system to alter speed to match conditions. Hyundai combines this system with lane keeping assist to create the semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist.
Parking is easier with Hyundai Remote Smart Parking Assist. This autonomous system can do all the work: braking, throttle, and steering. It works for both parallel and perpendicular spaces. Plus, you can hold the keyfob and stand to the side if you need to.
