7 Ways to Compare the New Ioniq 6 to the Ioniq 5

Electric vehicles are all the rage these days. The Ioniq 6 is following up on the Ioniq 5’s winning streak by winning awards of its own. However, there must be differences, and that’s what this Ioniq comparison is here to explain.

Shoppers can get details on each EV’s specifications, powertrains, drivetrains, fuel efficiency, and cabin spaciousness. Plus we’ll be discussing style, amenities, technologies, and overall value.

  1. Style, Quality, and Amenities

An Ioniq 6 is a car with a streamliner look. From the front, it exudes a futuristic vibe. The back, however, is a bit more retro. The final product both promises a contemporary lifestyle and fulfills it. The style is drawn from the Hyundai prophecy concept.

In comparison, the Ioniq 5 sits taller and is more commanding. Its distinctive design is one reason that Car and Driver has given it a 10 out of 10 rating. Edmunds, which rates it at the top of its class, praises its cool retro vibe.

High quality materials and an emphasis on fit-and-finish help ensure that these rides are worthy of a shopper’s attention. While Hyundai stain-resistant cloth upholstery is standard, a rich H Tex leatherette can add to the style.

Favorite amenities include the Bose premium audio system, dual power chairs, and a “relaxation” function on the driver’s chair. For the hottest Arizona summers, it’s hard to beat the combination of dual automatic temperature controls, second-row AC vents, and front-row ventilated seats.

  2. Sedan vs Crossover

When looking at the two Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicles side by side, you will immediately notice that the Ioniq 5 is an SUV while the Ioniq 6 is unmistakably a sedan.

Inside either Ioniq, the floor is flat. This helps the Ioniq 6 claim 103 cubic feet of passenger space, making its cabin one of the biggest among sedans today. It’s just a bit short of the 108 cu ft in the Ioniq 5. Yet the numbers indicate that the Ioniq 6 front row claims a few extra inches compared to the SUV.

Naturally, the Ioniq 5 SUV has more cargo space than a sedan trunk. It also offers side window shades for kids on the second row. The rear seats recline, and second-row legroom is definitely best in the Ioniq EV.

  3. Awards and Rankings

The 2023 Ioniq 6 is very new, but it has already managed to scoop the World Car awards. It is the World Car of the Year as well as the World Electric Vehicle. It also took home the World Car Design of the Year.

The Ioniq 5 is the Motor Trend 2023 SUV of the Year, a good follow up to last year’s 2022 World Car of the Year. More recently, Good Housekeeping put the Ioniq 5 on its list of 2023 Best New Family Cars with the Best Electric Crossover Award. Cars.com seems to agree, naming it the 2023 Top Pick Family EV.

It’s also the Top Rated Electric SUV at Edmunds and one of the 10Best Trucks and SUVs at Car and Driver. It earned best buy awards from Kelley Blue Book (KBB), Consumer Guide, and the Car Connection. In fact, KBB named it Best Electric Vehicle in its class and Best New Model overall.

  1. Dashboard Connectivity and Innovation

These electric cars have plenty of competitors but shoppers will pay more to get the same high tech cabin. You can pay an extra $10,000 for the BMWi4 or nearly double the price with a Mercedes EQE. You can even save some over the Tesla Model 3.

The Ioniq 6 comes with the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment screen that are found on the Ioniq 5. This ensures that both electric vehicles are on the cutting edge of what’s possible today.

Other standards include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These two connectivity systems are notably absent on the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. For those accustomed to this natural interface, this will seem quite odd.

The special interface has dynamic voice recognition. This Hyundai feature has been refined to offer the best human-machine interactions. Higher trims of both the sedan and SUV offer a wireless charger.

BlueLink provides a connected car system for remote starts. There’s remote charge access as well.

  2. Electric Range and Performance

Like all electric vehicles today, there are multiple powertrain choices whether you prefer the crossover or the sedan. For 2023, the most dynamic Ioniq 5 crossover is the dual-motor all-wheel drive edition producing 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft. It has a range of 266 miles.

The SE RWD standard range model has a single motor set-up that produces 168 horsepower and can go for 220 miles. With a bigger battery, this choice produces an extra 5 horsepower and can go 303 miles.

The Ioniq 6 Long Range model can claim a 366-mile range. All-wheel drive models can go 270 miles. Available in limited quantities, a short range battery allows for 220 miles of driving with 149 horsepower.

Like the Ioniq 5, all-wheel drive Ioniq 6 models generate 320 horsepower. The standard battery pack allows for a rate of 149 horsepower while the bigger battery raises that to 225 horsepower.

  1. Charging the Battery

With their 800-volt architecture, an owner just needs six or seven hours to maintain the vehicle’s full charge. The exact amount of time depends on the Ioniq model, battery and drivetrain.

EPA ratings for each model differ, but they are all excellent for an electric vehicle today. The Ioniq 6 is expected to need only $500 or $600 for power in a year. The Ioniq 5 is only slightly higher with a predicted cost of $650 or $750 annually.

The fast charging capability is really a winner at a roadside charger. These Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicles can achieve a roadworthy charge in about 18 minutes. This is true of all Ioniq powertrains, regardless of drivetrain.

With the right loan or lease, you can become the owner of one of these green machines. Your Ioniq dealership is San Tan Hyundai.

  2. Taking Care of Parents and Kids

The Ioniq 5 is a favorite with parents because it offers the larger cargo hold. However both offer multiple LATCH attachments on the second row and a rear passenger alert to help ensure sleeping children aren’t accidentally left behind.

Of course, these models have a power window-lock button and rear child safety locks. A Hyundai standard, not available on many cars yet, is the safe exit warning that helps prevent kids from stepping into traffic after the Ioniq EV stops.

Conclusion

Now that you know how these two Ioniq EVs can serve you, it should be easier to decide between them. One thing’s for sure, both of them will be good investments.
