The 2022 Hyundai Kona really can earn its keep. That’s why it was chosen the 2022 Best Subcompact SUV for the Money from the judges at U.S. News and World Report. Exterior
The new look of the 2022 Hyundai Kona combines a sporty aesthetic with an aerodynamic emphasis. There are vertically-oriented inlets to help air flow through. Hyundai’s protective armor design has been updated on the fascias front and back. There are skid plates, new wheel designs and new colors. The Kona EV model has been refreshed as well with similar updates. New daylight running lights and headlights are reshaped for a more striking look. The Limited adds rain-sensing wipers and automated high beams. The N-Line has numerous design cues, such as rocker panels and diamond-cut alloy wheels, that show its intention to take on adventure. Adding to the ability to slip through the wind, Hyundai designers created an aerodynamic lip that has angled low corner fonts. They also added a large central aerodynamic diffuser. The air intakes now wear a unique mesh design. The single-tip exhaust is upgraded to large bore dual outlets, indicating the serious intentions of this speed machine.
Interior Trim Levels
The standard SE cabin impresses critics with its quality, fit and finish. They appreciate how well it is organized, how uncluttered it feels, and how ergonomic the cockpit is. The presence of essential dash technologies makes it seem as if there is nothing to be added there.The standard 8-inch display comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 2022 Hyundai Kona SEL is another good value, adding push button start, HD radio and satellite radio, and a monitor for the blind spot and reverse cross traffic. It also has heated side mirrors and a safe exit warning. BlueLink includes a remote starter and many other important extras. The Kona Limited cabin has leather-trimmed seats, the full 10.25 navigation touch screen, and a terrific Harman Kardon audio system. Inside the N-line, the black seats are highlighted with a distinctive red. The N cabin feels rich with its leather and suede upholstery.
Capability, Utility and Specifications
Labeled a small SUV, this Hyundai nonetheless manages to have 94 cu.ft. of passenger space, a slight improvement over the 2021 Kona. Legroom for the rear seats has increased to 35.2 inches. The cargo hold measurements are now over 19 cu.ft. Furthermore, if the second row is folded, the hold measures 45.8 cu.ft. Ground clearance for all models is 6.7 inches. The Kona is not recommended for towing. However, the roof rails can hold up to 176 pounds if equipped. (Always check your manual to avoid overloading a vehicle with cargo.)
Performance Standards
The Hyundai SE and SEL trim levels are powered by a 2-liter four-cylinder Atkinson engine. This produces a solid 147 horsepower. It allows the SUV to claim 30 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 32 combined. The N Line and Limited have a more powerful engine, but they can still claim that same 32 mpg combined. A 1.6T four-cylinder engine generates 195 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It’s fun to drive, and it doesn’t punish the Kona N-Line owner at the gas station. That’s quite a package. The Hyundai all-wheel drive system is available on the SE, SEL, N-Line and Limited. This adds Active On-Demand capability that knows when wheels need more traction. It can redirect power to the wheels to keep the ride smooth on snow or sand.
Performance Leaders
The 100-percent electric powertrain has a combined output of 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque. This gives the 2022 Hyundai Kona EV an estimated range of 258 miles. With that much power, the Kona EV is actually more powerful than the two regular engine choices. This makes this Hyundai EV especially appealing to those who love to drive. Then again, the N Model is the most powerful Kona ever. The turbo produces 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. Special equipment includes a unique N Corner Carving Differential that helps hold the road. An Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD) further improves high-speed handling. The eLSD helps with all-weather response as well. N Launch Control helps build up torque before the SUV takes off.
Safety
The Hyundai SUV has consistently earned the coveted 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the 2022 Hyundai Kona already has its five stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the Kona a good rating in the crash tests it performed. Driver assistance standards include a forward collision warning, a pedestrian warning, an emergency autobrake, lane keep assist, lane following assist, and a driver attention alert.
